The Fast
By Shamsiah Samsudin
The muezzin calls
Yet my fast continues
Will he be back?
The loneliness of being together
The quiet of words
Unsaid and loud
The remembrance of what was lost
Forgetting what we have
Vows that sounded like anchors
Now losing ground
The abyss of solitude
Waves that cleanse, clarify
Ebbing and flowing into a lull
As I wait
Stolen glances, will he make his move
Does his soul burn like mine ?
The hollow ache I’ve kept away
Keeping my distance
I don’t want it that way
Perhaps this is where our path splits
I’ll wait
Stealing glances
Oh wait, what’s this ?
He pulls me close
The quiet of words
Unsaid and loud
We break our fast
